Frequently Asked Questions:

for MAKE YOUR FUTURE

Q:  Can a group apply to the Make Your Future program?

A: We encourage collaboration, but the Make Your Future residency is only awarded to one person, so the application should be written by a principal applicant.   However as a member, you as the principal applicant will have a key for 24×7 access to the space and can bring two guests at a time (as outlined in our membership agreement) to assist you with your project. Your guests do not have access to the metal or woodshops.

Q: What if my project involves welding and I don’t know how to weld? Will I be disqualified?

A: No, we will help you learn technical skills. We encourage you to ask for help (from anyone, and at any point in the project) as the Staten Island MakerSpace values collaboration. It's common for members to help each other out, and as a fellow member, we're here to help you out.

Q: I already have a venture capitalist lined up to help me develop my startup. Am I still eligible?

A: Yes, great for you!  There’s no limit to how much additional funding you can spend on your project. Spend as much of your own personal money or sponsored money as you need.

Q: Do I have to have a fully realized product or project by the end of the residency?

A: No. We do expect that you will have made enough progress on the project to present it to the public in an informal presentation at the end of the residency.

Q: Are there any limitations to size, power requirements, weight, etc?

A: There are limitations, but these will be determined by the scope of the project. If limitations become apparent in the proposal review, we can communicate them to you and make changes as needed.

Q: I have an idea for an art project, can I apply for this or is this only for tech startups?

A: Yes, you are welcome to apply. We are looking for proposals in a wide variety of areas including art projects, product development, open source software and hardware projects, and hopefully things we can’t even imagine yet. The bottom line is if you can dream it and want to make it, and you think our program will help you do that, you are eligible to apply.

Q: I live in Brazil, can I still apply?

A: Yes, but you must find a place to live in NYC for the duration of the residency and you must provide your own transportation to get here. We can make suggestions, but you are ultimately responsible for finding your own housing.

Q: Do I have to use all the resources that you offer?

A: Not necessarily. But we encourage you to take advantage of as many resources as you can because they are designed to help you better succeed.
